Editing Psychological Thrillers

Editing Psychological Thrillers

Editing psychological thrillers is a fun process that challenges authors and editors alike. It’s our responsibility at Ooligan Press to assist authors during the editorial process. Building relationships with authors not only makes editing smoother but it helps form an artistic bond. Psychological thrillers need extra attention from both editors and authors in order to portray mental illnesses and symptoms accurately.

Separating Personal Preference from Productivity in the Editing Process

Editing involves exposing harsh truths, making tough decisions, and facilitating collaboration. So how can an editor—especially a new one—make sure that their decisions, suggestions, and occasional wing-clippings are fair? The answer lies in the ability to separate what we want a story to be (which is subjective and infinite) from what the story and author needs.

Digital Skills Empower Publishing Professionals

Digital Skills Empower Publishing Professionals

Dr. Kathi Berens opened up our digital skills class for a discussion about the complexities surrounding digital media platforms, synthesizing the article with her belief that “basic code literacy is an extraordinarily empowering skill set that…gives users a level self-control and freedom that people don’t have if they rely entirely on third parties to represent their public speech.” Her point parallels one made by Michelle Goldberg in the aforementioned article: while she agrees with the decisions made that ultimately de-platformed the former President, she also states that people “don’t have a constitutional right to have their speech disseminated by private companies,” and that it is “dangerous to have a handful of callow young tech titans in charge of who has a megaphone and who does not.” We are not political leaders, but publishers are global leaders; how, and on whose terms, we use our voices matters.

Editing Your Own Work: The First Draft to the Polished Product

Many years ago, I came across an interview with the late James Michener, the Pulitzer Prize winning author whose forty books have sold tens of millions of copies. In the interview, he was asked about the secret to his success. The essence of his answer, which has always stuck in my head, was this: I am a better editor than a writer.

From Fanfiction to Publishing

While it is true that editing is a crucial aspect of publishing, it isn’t the only aspect. The publishing industry has a place for every bibliophile out there—even fanfiction writers.
