Did COVID Bring Certain Death or New Life to Independent Bookstores in the PNW?

Things were also changing for Rachelle Markley, the owner of Crooked House Books and Paper. She said that walk-in traffic dropped off, but luckily she had always been selling online, her biggest presence being on Etsy. During March of last year, she fully expected not to make it when people were “hoarding beans and toilet paper;” she did not think that people were going to open their wallets and start buying “weird collectible books,” yet somehow the pandemic has been really good for online book sales.

How To Stay Sane in the Publishing Industry

It’s easy to let work and education overwhelm you, especially in this time of isolation we find ourselves in. There are so many things to do in the press, in classes, and in our own lives that we can lose the time we need to, well, take time. It can feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day, or minutes in the hours we get, to just take time for ourselves—but there are when you add boundaries.

How to Build Community with Other Editors

Although editors are a notoriously introverted bunch, we all stand to benefit from a little social connection. What happens when you run into a truly perplexing problem—be it a difficult client or a questionable comma—and you need to turn to other editors for advice? Where can editors go to receive mentoring and swap war stories? This post outlines some of the ways in which editors can connect with each other—virtually as well as in person—in order to grow as professionals and build a sense of community.

Introducing Laurel Everywhere

By Tia Sprague

Ooligan Press is excited to announce our newest YA novel, LAUREL EVERYWHERE by debut author Erin Moynihan, set to launch November 10, 2020. LAUREL EVERYWHERE is an intimate depiction of the grief and mental-health issues often experienced with the loss of loved ones. The novel highlights complicated family relationships in the wake of tragedy: Laurel grapples with her own feelings of loss while her father spirals into a deeper depression, requiring a long stay in a hospital that specializes in grief. Although much of the book focuses on grief, loss, and mental health, LAUREL EVERYWHERE is also a story of survival, love, hope, and friendship. Follow Laurel on a journey of self-discovery, self-healing, and growth as she learns that sometimes it’s okay to not be okay.

Your Art Deserves Support

I would be hard pressed to find anyone in my life that isn’t connected to an artistic pursuit. Before entering graduate school for publishing, I was a professional actor and spent many years entrenched in the performing arts. I’m engaged to a musician and some of my closest companions are actors, dancers, writers, and visual […]
