Audiobooks have quickly become one of the fastest-growing areas of publishing in recent years, and Ooligan Press has recently taken on the task of exploring this exciting frontier. As we get ready to start including audiobooks in the publication of a few of our upcoming titles, we have begun testing the process by putting together a mock sample using one of our most well-known titles, Ricochet River. Here is an inside peek at the process, which we have undertaken with the help of the School of Music & Art’s new program.
Simplicity may seem a poor approach to standing out in the expansive internet, but websites can be one of an author’s most useful tools in book and career promotion, and it doesn’t take much to effectively connect with an audience.
I had the privilege of sitting down with John Henley, a well-known appraiser of rare books in the Pacific Northwest. He has also been an adjunct of the PSU Book Publishing Program since its inception, teaching the survey course titled The Popular Book in the United States. We talked about his job as appraiser, his Oolie aspirations, and how his love of books—inspired early on by his mother—led him to a career of buying and selling them for Powell’s and The Great Northwest Bookstore.
At the end of every winter term, students at Ooligan Press have the opportunity to become project managers (PMs) and department leads, and a year later, they must pass the torch to next year’s students. As managers are currently in the process of training their successors, three departing project managers reflect on the challenges and achievements throughout their tenure and give advice to future Ooligan PMs.
Ricochet River has been a staple in Pacific Northwest classrooms for over two decades. And now, in honor of the twenty-fifth anniversary edition of Ricochet River, Ooligan has put out a handy new Ricochet River Teaching Unit so high school teachers have a great resource to refer to as they bring Ricochet River into their classrooms.
Ricochet River’s 25th Anniversary Edition is now available in stores, and to celebrate Ooligan kicked it off with a fantastic launch party on May 7th at Ford Food & Drink in Southeast Portland.
