By this point in the story, Jesse is flying pretty high. Do you think a soft landing is possible for him, or is he going to crash? Why? What do you think Jesse’s fate will be, and how will his conclusion relate to the overarching themes?
What effect has his family’s habit of playing Trying-To-Say had on Wade? Find examples in the text where this effect has manifested both in Wade’s behavior and in his narration. Do people in your life play Trying-To-Say? Why do you think they do it? What effect does it have on you?
“Jesse never calculated,” Wade tells us. “He never thought ahead.” Do you agree with Wade? Why or why not?
