What is Write to Publish?
Write to Publish is a yearly conference on publishing hosted by Ooligan Press, the student-run, nonprofit press at the heart of the Portland State University publishing program. Write to Publish began as a fundraiser and open house to inform the public about the program, and in 2009 it grew into a conference providing writers’ workshops, panels, and speeches by authors and industry professionals. Attendees can also participate in the contests and raffle, as well as meet and greet with the vendors.
What makes this conference different than a standard writer’s conference?
Write to Publish is focused primarily on the publishing process, rather than on the craft of writing. The goal of the conference is to demystify publishing for emerging writers and industry professionals, offering information on the state of the publishing industry and advice on how to navigate it successfully. If you are looking for practical advice on the business side of writing, this is the conference for you.
Who should attend, and what can they expect to get out of it?
Writers will gain a better understanding of the publishing process, how it works, what they can expect and what is expected of them. They can get help with queries and pitches and learn about the business of writing. Publishing professionals will keep up to date on changes in the industry, and will have the opportunity to network with peers and writers. Artists will also learn about creative funding opportunities for their projects.

What is included in the conference registration fee?
Entrance to all panel discussions and workshops, access to the bookfair and the networking after-hours event.
How do I register?

Do I have to attend the conference to enter one of the contests?
No. Anyone may enter the contests, although we do encourage attendance. Contest winners will receive a free ticket to the conference and the opportunity to read from their work.
Who judges the contests?
The Pacific Northwest Poetry contest and the Flash Fiction contest will both be judged by the Write to Publish team (and possibly by a contest partner).
